Reality Bites
One of my favourite colleagues from the last job and one, told me that I should always be grateful. Grateful that is, for those few days off in the period I call Twixmas. (The period we found ourselves in at the moment, the time after Christmas and before the New Year when you lose track of the days, every day feels like a Sunday). I dismissed his comment, as I assumed that I would always be off at this time of year. I was wrong. My cousin Susan, perhaps as long as a decade ago now, commented that I should enjoy my Christmas holidays as in the reality of work, I would only really have a few days off. Being young, naive and what many would call stupid, I too dismissed her comments with a pinch of salt.
Here I find myself, working today, tomorrow and even NYE but am I really that concerned? Sure, it was hard to get up on Wednesday morning (particularly as on Tuesday (28th – yesterday) I had slept in until midday!). I think the human body clocks needs a gentle nudge to go from waking up at 11am, to before 6am! There were some positives – clear roads, but also some negatives – coffee shop closed! I got some work done, which was good I suppose but then I think how I would have spent these days at home? Watching endless television? Shopping in the sales? Sleeping? I am not too sure but the sharp jolt back into work mode was critical. Why? Well next week (I am working from Monday onwards for a rare full five days in the office) I am covering for a colleague away on holiday.
How was my Christmas? It was good, the standard cosy family affair, but of course, this year there was the benefit of spending it with two families rather than just my immediate family. It was not outrageous and if anything I prefer a low key Christmas, particularly with some many big events planned for 2011. The only annoying thing as that due to the poor weather, one of my presents did not arrive until today. (It had been scheduled to arrive on 22nd December, but a 2-3 day backlog at the depot meant I had to wait until after the festivities. I look forward to finally delivering the gift for that special someone on New Year’s Eve. It was the second consecutive year I did not go on my annual Christmas shopping trip with Clive. Although that would have been good to try and get out to the shops further afield, in the end I just went to Eden with Michelle on 21st December (a day I had already prebooked off). The rest of items I ordered online and thankfully they all arrived on time (some as late as Christmas Eve though, so I was cutting it rather fine but I enjoy leaving it late!)
Come Fly With Me has to be one of my Christmas highlights, although time will tell if Lucas and Walliams will be able to find the consistency to keep the laughs coming like Little Britain. (I was never much of a fan, but my Dad found it totally hilarious!). What makes the show so funny, is the fact I used to watch on a semi-religious basis the shows Airport and cheap imitation Airline with my sisters. Moses Beacon is a take on Kelvin Ogdanjimmy, who was the conceirge for Canadian Airlines. I even had to go onto YouTube to relive some of the funnier moments from the Airport series. My favourite character (you may have noticed from my Facebook profile photo update) is Flylo Roving Ground Crew – Taaj Manzoor – you took can follow him on Twitter – you get me?
